The Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End manga is written by Kanehito Yamada and illustrated by Tsukasa Abe, the duo that is responsible for the creation of this great series. The series began publication in Shogakukan’s popular shōnen manga magazine Weekly Shōnen Sunday on April 28, 2020, and has been published ever since. The series has a solid number of Chapters so far (117 as of the time of writing), and an ending has not been announced. The series did go on a brief hiatus on January 18, 2023 – the reasons were not revealed – but resumed quite soon, as the following chapter was published on March 22, 2023.
The anime adaptation was announced in September 2022 in the ninth volume of the original manga series, and the first episode premiered a year later, on September 29, 2023. Interestingly enough, the series – contrary to contemporary practice – premiered with a 2-hour special that was actually the first four episodes combined after it began airing regularly on a weekly basis. The studio behind the anime is Madhouse, with Keiichirō Saitō directing from scripts written by Tomohiro Suzuki. Evan Call was in charge of the music, with Yoasobi performing the opening theme “Yūsha” (勇者, “Hero”), and milet performing the ending songs “Bliss” and “Anytime Anywhere”.
The Frieren anime has become a global hit in the meantime and fans all around the world are amazed with how well the anime is doing, claiming that Frieren could be a refreshing improvement and a trend-setting anime in the industry. And while its legacy has yet to be seen, it cannot be denied that Frieren is a truly amazing series that is worth watching.

Now, as of December 2023, Frieren already has 15 episodes, which is way past the usual length of a cour (12-14 episodes) today; most contemporary anime series are broadcast in cours and that has become – more or less – a standard practice, but Frieren is not sticking with that practice, which had fans a bit confused. Namely, if Frieren has already passed the magical mark, how many episodes is it going to have?
Well, as far as the official Blu-ray listings confirm, the Frieren anime series is going to have a total of 28 episodes in its first season, which is a major thing for contemporary shows, which rarely pass the 12-to-14-episode mark. The series is going to run continuously until March 2024 without any planned breaks, which is also “revolutionary” in modern terms, so we can say that Frieren is definitely breaking a lot of contemporary rules, which is a great thing. So, you can rejoice, as the season has only just passed the halfway mark, so there are several months’ worth of content still remaining.
As for the future, although nothing has been confirmed officially as of the time of writing, with the manga still ongoing and the series being extremely popular, Frieren is likely going to be renewed for a second season, but we doubt that the next season will premiere before late 2025 or even 2026, based on how the industry works.
