2024 Olympic Games RECAP: Peaty beaten after Murray's heroics (2025)

It's not quite the end of the action, with the surfing taking place in a different time zone, but all the medal have been accounted for on Day Two in Paris.

Japan currently lead the way with four golds. That third prize was added in the women's street skateboarding final earlier. They also grabbed a silver medal which has helped keep their noses in front of Australia.

Unsurprisingly Team USA have the most medals to their name and they'll probably pull ahead in no time. They have brought the most athletes after all...

Hosts France have also made a good start. They've notched three golds so far in what is expected to be a very successful Games for them. Peaty's silver in the pool sees Team GB climb into the top 15.

Team GB grabbed a late equaliser to claim a 2-2 draw in the men's hockey to maintain their unbeaten start. They sit second in Pool A behind the world number 1 ranked the Netherlands, who they meet in their next clash on Tuesday.

God Save the King may not have been blaring out but Peaty will no doubt reflect on his performance with immense pride.

The wait for a Team GB gold goes on. We've become used to seeing him clinch the first of the Games at the last two editions. So let's hope that piece of metal isn't far away.

Martinenghi (second from the left) just got his hands to the pad ahead of Peaty and Fink, who were incredibly tied for second.

What a race. The winner came from none of the names mentioned. It's the Italian Martinenghi who takes it by 0.02 seconds.

Peaty and Fink couldn't be seperated in joint-second. The Brit now has three Olympic golds and three silver medals to his name. He'll be gutted not to win it after coming so close but an Olympic silver is never something to sniff at.

It's finally time. Peaty goes in the fourth lane. He's the favourite but this is an incredibly competitive field. The commentators are anticipating a dogfight.

USA's Fink, the world champion, a couple of flying Dutchman and China's Qin will all be big threats.

For years Peaty has only had himself to compete with but this will be very different. Let's see if he can claim a breatstroke hattrick.

A great swim in the second semi-final by Morgan will see him compete in the final tomorrow night. He came through in 82:85, just outside his own British record. China's Jiayu put in a stunning performance to put the rest of the field on notice.

It's almost time for Peaty to take the pool but before then there's the small matter of a couple of semi-finals to decide. Britain's Jonathan Marshall goes in the first, while Oliver Morgan is in the second.

The Matildas completed an astonishing turnaround earlier to sink Zambia in their second group stage match in Paris. They trailed 5-2 just before the hour but somehow managed to secure a 6-5 win and their first victory at the Games.

The debutant finished fourth in the second semi-final behind the likes of world record holder Lily King and Ireland's McSharry. It was a brilliant swim for the youngster who has qualified for tomorrow night's final with the sixth-fastest time.

The defending champion goes in search of his fourth Olympic gold medal in the men's 100m breatstroke. The event is set to get underway at 20:40.

The Brit came home in second behind the favourite Popovic, who will be incredibly tough to stop in the final. Good news for Scott's team-mate Richards. Looks like his time wil be enough for him to make the final.

A couple of medal hopes for Team GB tomorrow night.

The British swimming star, part of Team GB's victorious 4x200m freestyle relay team in Tokyo, finished fourth in his 200m freestyle semi-final with a time of 1:45.63.

One more race to come when we'll see if that's enough to qualify. Duncan Scott goes in the second semi.

I can't quite believe that they've managed to pull this off. They lost seven games in a row during the match. They were broken twice in the second set. They faced FIVE match points in the tie-break.

But Murray and Evans have turned it around and won the match. Wow! What a game, what a result.

The home favourite absoluely blitzed the competition. The ground cheered every time he bobbed his head above the water during one of his legs.

Unfortunately it's heartache for Litchfield as the Brit finishes the contest in fourth. It will be scant consolation that it's a new PB for the swimmer.

Gold for Marchand, silver goes to Japan's Matsushita and the USA's Foster takes bronze.

Japan still have one more. Are they going to get out of this bind?

The Brits are now four points down in the tie-break. They will get the serve back after the change of ends. Let's see if they can recover yet again.

... And there's plenty of GB representation. Adam Peaty is looking to win his third Olympic gold a little but later but first up it's Max Litchfield in the 400m individual medley.

Diyora Keldiyorova becomes Uzbekistan's first Olympic champion in the sport.

What an effort from the British pair. They had their serve broken twice but they rescued themselves and are finally level in this match.

Another tie-break will decide this one, only it's not to the traditional seven. Instead they'll go to 10.

It's 3-3 in the tie-break and it's getting increasingly nervy...

The Japanese duo hold so we're headed for a taditional tie-break. Lose this and it's all over.

They haven't managed to maintain their form for very long in this match but when they're on it, they're just too much for Daniel and Nishikori.

Another chance to win the second set coming up here.

Daniel and Nishikori end a run of three games on the bounce for Murray and Evans. It was a fairly routine hold to be fair to them. We're all level in teh second set.

2-6, 5-4*

They lead in the second set for the first time. Murray and Evans survived a break point and some other nervy moments but they've put themselves in a great position to gain parity in the match.

2-6, *4-4

They've broken back AGAIN. Murray and Evans win the game to love, with the former really turning on the style before finishing off the game with a superb volley.

Murray on serve. He really needs to hold it this time.

Could that be the platform? Evans holds his serve to cut the deficit.

Murray and Evans had one break point chance but their opponents held their nerve to hold and go two games ahead in the second set.

Evans next up to serve in what is a must win game. They all are at this point.

Man City's Yui Hasegawa netted twice in stoppage time to earn Japan a dramatic 2-1 win against Brazil in the women's football a little earlier.

That's enough winning for one day for Japan surely?

Murray has his serve broken for the third time in this match. The Japanese pair stepped it up again as the Brits' heads dropped.

Game on. Murray and Evans have their serve back after their best ame in some time.

They've managed to stop the run of consecutive games for their opponents. Murray and Evans have bought themselves some time here.

It's a massive few games ahead.

Add another to the scoreboard. It's 2-0 in the second and a 6-2 in the first. The fans are starting to sense it, even Evans and Murray look like they can feel it.

Can they find their form in time to keep this game alive?

It's yet another break for the Japenese pair. That's six games in a row and a break at the start of the second set.

That's the first set, 6-2 to Daniel and Nishikori. The duo won five games on the bounce and secured the opener in only 30 minutes.

Anyone else starting to worry this might actually be the end?

The format at the Olympics is best of three sets with a tie-break in the third for all doubles matches, so they'll need to be perfect from here.

Daniel and Nishikori are now up 5-2 in the first set. Nishikori is playing a blinder just hours after losing in the singles to Britain's Jack Draper.

The man himself will try and serve out the first set.

Not what we wanted to see so early on but the Brits have been broken. Nishikori in particular is looking in fine form, much better than he showed in the singles earlier.

It's early days but the Japanese duo are certainly on top. They now lead 4-2 in the first set.

The NBA's brightest stars are closing in on a win in their opening clash of rthe Olympics. They faced up against Serbia, who have the world's best player Nikola Jokic in their ranks, so this one has been anything but a walk in the park.

Lebron James and Kevin Durant have starred for the favourites. The score is 110-84 in the closing seconds of the clash.

Murray served the first game of the match which saw himself and Evans hold to take an early advantage. The stadium has started to fill up as excitement really builds.

The British pair are only minutes away from their opening round match ar Roland Garros. This of course could be the final match Murray plays. Let's hope that's not the case.

They play the Japanese duo Taro Daniel and Kei Nishikori in the men's doubles.

Dramatic scenes at the conclusion of the kayaking. The defending champion Funk had a nightmare run and ended up in 11th. Australia's Jess Fox takes the gold, while Poland's Zwolinska takes Silver.

And Woods hangs on for the bronze.

It's nail-biting stuff for Kimberley Woods as she waits to find out if she'll win a medal in Paris. The Brit has been pushed down into third with only one paddler remaining.

Unfortunately, she's the defending champion.

Skaters are tumbling all over the place as the Women's Street Skateboarding Final reaches its conclusion. We've just seen four of the competitors fail to stay on their boards in a row.

We now know the gold is heading to Japan but who will win the prize?

The K1 women's final is underway. Still a bit of time until Kimberley Woods has her shot at glory. Can she repeat her semi-final performance and get in among the medals?

The Nadal vs Djokovic dream showdown grows closer.

Nadal has just a break up to lead 3-2 in the deciding set of his first round match.

A win for Rafael Nadal would set up a mouthwatering clash with Novak Djokovic but his first round match is in the balance right now.

He took the opening set against Marton Fucsovics but the Hungarian has hit back to force a decider.

Dan Evans has provided an update on his injury sacre from earlier, admitting it was on his mind that he did not want to be the one to pull out of potentially Andy Murray's final ever match.

He told the BBC: 'I took a tumble and winded myself a bit. I am just a bit sore at the minute, so I will go and get checked out and then jump in the ice bath.

'I was concerned about it (having to pull out of the doubles) for that whole match.

'I do not want to be the one that is pulling out on him. We agreed it was doubles first this week and when I was rolling on the clay, that is what was going through my head.'

Could Woods get Team GB's third medal?

She has qualified third-fastest for the final which is due to get underway in just under an hour.

They had to work hard for it but the GB women's rugby sevens team have made a winning start in Paris after beating Ireland 21-12.

Can they now kick on and move towards a medal in the competition?

Boulter was well beaten 6-4, 6-2 by Anna Karolina Schmiedlova of Slovakia.

It has not been a good day for Boulter after her boyfriend Alex De Minaur withdrew from the men's singles due to injury.

Boulter still has the doubles with Heather Watson to come.

Team GB are still on top in the eventing competition but Laura Collett was given 15 jumping penalty points.

GB have called for a review, but they still lead France for now.

Watching Simone Biles this morning was the hottest ticket in town!

Dan Evans has battled back from an injury scare to win!

He dropped the second set 6-4 but came storming back to take the decider 6-2.

We've been in need of some positive news and Kimberley Woods has just done an excellent run in the K1 semi-finals.

She looks set to be in the final later today.

A valiant effort from Richards who finishes 25 seconds outside of the medal places in a race that took almost 90 minutes.

Pauline Ferrand-Prevot won by over three minutes - a phenomenal performance from the French star.

Andy Murray can blow a sigh of relief - at least for now.

Dan Evans is back on his feet and playing on, let's hope that's the last of his injury scares.

The cross-country cycling is coming towards its conclusion, with Evie Richards currently in fifth.

She is 30 seconds off the medal places so still has plenty of catching up to do. But how about this rear wheel issue for Candice Lill earlier in the race!?

Dan Evans had romped to a first set win over Tunisia's Moez Echargui, but may have picked up an injury here.

Evans looked to have sustained a cut on his knee but seems to have hurt his wrist too over at Roland Garros.

He is, of course, meant to be partnering Andy Murray in the men's doubles later on...

And it's bad news in the hockey, where Team GB have just been beaten 2-1 by an impressive Spain side.

It was a blistering start with the three goals of the game all coming inside nine minutes, but Spain held on to win their opening pool game at the Olympics.

Next up for Team GB will be Australia tomorrow as they look to make the cut, with four of the six sides set to make it out the pool.

Hosts France look set to pick up another gold in the cross-country with Pauline Ferrand-Prevot well clear of the chasing pack.

Evie Richards is down in eighth and running out of time to make a charge for the podium.

Jack Draper has won the first set of his opening singles match 6-1 against Kei Nishikori.

Nishikori is due to play against Andy Murray and Dan Evans in the doubles later today as well.

Richards is off the pace early on in this cross-country race as she finds herself down in ninth.

She has a lot of catching up to do if she is to get back into medal contention.

Anna Hursey has lost in the table tennis to India's Manika Batra.

She is the first Welsh woman table tennis player to play at the Olympics and is still only 18 so has time to come again.

Nigerian boxer Cynthia Ogunsemilore will not compete in Paris after being provisionally suspended for failing a drugs test.

She has tested positive for the banned substance furosemide.

So far, so good for Andy Murray's doubles partner.

Team GB picked up a medal in the women's time trial yesterday and it's now time for the women's cross-country event.

2021 world champion Evie Richards will be in action, can she bring home a medal for Team GB?

Giles gave an emotional interiew to the BBC after her judo exit this morning, having been one of the favourites for a medal.

Let's start with the bad news...

Tokyo bronze medallist Chelsie Giles went out of the judo in the second round, while Rosie Eccles was on the wrong end of a very close decision in the boxing.

Cam Norrie has also withdrawn from the tennis due to injury.

And now the good news...

Team GB flag bearer Helen Glover is into the final of the women's four in rowing. The women's gymnasts also impressed in qualifying, while Max Litchfield starred in the swimming pool and looks to be a medal prospect ahead of this evening's session.

Team Gb's gymnasts did themselves proud this morning in qualifying and they celebrated by dancing afterwards.

Dan Evans is taking on Tunisia's Moez Echargui in the men's singles.

He is set to return to court later to join Andy Murray in the men's doubles.

More disappointing news for Team GB after Eccles's elimination as Cam Norrie withdraws from the men's singles due to injury just over an hour before he was due to take to the court.

Eccles has lost her first round contest on a split decision.

It was all to play for heading into the third and final round and her Polish opponent had a point deducted for fialing to keep her head up, but the judges still gave her the verdict.

Another tough blow for the boxing team who have already lost two of their six fighters.

Another very solid performance on uneven bars from Simone Biles as she scores 14.433.

She could not have hoped for much better on her return to the Olympic stage.

Time for some boxing now and Rosie Eccles is into the first round of her opening contest.

Her opponent has just gone down but is was scored as a slip rather than a knockdown.

Biles has noticeable heavy strapping on her left ankle and appears to be limping a little, but it's not affecting her performances right now.

She nails her vault routine and gets a huge 15.800. That is incredible!

After what happened in Tokyo, Biles could be forgiven for feeling the nerve today, but there have been no signs of them.

She has now delivered on the floor, registering a score of 14.600.

It's all smiles for the US superstar right now.

The perfect start for Glover and Co as they win their heat to qualify for the final.

They led from 500m onwards and never looked like relinquishing their lead.

Team GB flag bearer Helen Glover is in action in the women's four, and they have made a good start.

They lead halfway through the race with the top two making the final.

A devastating blow for Chelsie Giles in the judo as she has been beaten in the second round by Brazil's Larissa Pimenta.

Giles took home bronze in Tokyo but will leave empty-handed this time.

Did you expect anything less?

Biles has just smashed it on her first piece of apparatus, registering a huge score of 14.733.

And she has the full support of rap legend Snoop Dogg as well!

Training for the swimming leg of the triathlon has been cancelled today due to concerns over levels of pollution in the Seine.

The triathlon is due to take place this week, but practice ahead of the event has been very limited.

The Olympic dream is over for Ben Lane and Sean Vendy in the men's doubles as they were beaten by the top seeds from China.

Steven van de Velde has lost his first match in Paris, as he and partner Matthew Immers were beaten by Italian pair Adrian Ignacio Carambula Raurich and Alex Ranghieri.

Van De Velde is due to be back in action on Wednesday in his next Pool B match.

Well done Max Litchfield!

Not put off by being next to French favourite Leon Marchand, he has just qualified second-fastest for the men's 400 individual medley final.

That will also be tonight, so could we have medals for Peaty and Litchfield this evening?

After two days of non-stop rain in Paris, the clouds have subsided and it is a beautiful day in the French capital today.

A good start in the pool this morning as Richards and Scott secure their place in this evening's semi-finals.

Richards was sixth-fastest and Scott 11th, but both men will know they need to go quicker to make the final.

Great Britain were unable to get past Germany and they have exited the women's competition.

All three archers will be back for the individual event, though.

Team GB have finished their gymnastics qualification with an overall score of 160.830.

They now have to see how the other two sub-divisions get on, but they appear well placed to make the final.

The hosts are hanging their hopes on superstar swimmer Leon Marchand in the pool.

It's a packed house today as he will be in action later this morning.

Seonaid McIntosh has missed out on the 10am air rifle final after finishing 37th in qualifying this morning.

Meanwhile, we have swimming heats coming up shortly, with Duncan Scott and Matt Richards taking to the pool.

Team GB's women currently taking on Germany in archery. It's a tough ask against the No6 seeds, and GB are behind in the early stages of that one.

We told you Steven van de Velde was in action this morning and he has been booed during his first match by the crowd in Paris.

Becky Downie has just done an excellent bars routine that should be enough to get her into the individual final.

Great Britain have confirmed their captain for the athletics which gets underway later this week.

It will be 1500m world champion Josh Kerr, who will be looking to add Olympic gold to his world title.

It's an action-packed day with Team GB's women in qualifying for the team final as well as individual finals. They are in the first sub-division and have already got their campaign underway this morning.

We will also have Matt Richards and Duncan Scott in action in the 200m freestyle heats from 10am and flag bearer Helen Glover taking part in the rowing from 11:30am.

It will then be all eye on Adam Peaty this evening when he goes for his third straight gold in the 100m breatstroke final. His race is due at 8:40pm.

We've got plenty of action coming up today, with Andy Murray set to take to the court in the men's doubles this afternoon.

He will play alongside Dan Evans against Japanese pair Kei Nishikori and Taro Daniel. It could be his final ever match - but let's hope not!

The most controversial athlete at the Olympics will be in action this morning.

Convicted child rapist Steven van de Velde will be playing for the Netherlands in the beach volleyball when they take on Italy.

He is due on court any minute now.
